Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances. It replaced CORGI in 2009. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register, but there are illegal gas fitters out there. Cutting corners with gas can cost lives, so remember – don’t cut corners and always use a Gas Safe registered engineer like JWCI for any site gas work.

All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. Before any gas work is carried out always check the card and make sure the engineer is qualified for the work.

Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

Protect yourself from the dangers by following these simple steps:

Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your gas appliances
Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year
Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm
Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks or stains around the appliance.
Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

About the accreditation

Choosing the right steelwork contractor is now your legal duty

Under the CPR it is now mandatory for all structural steel fabrications delivered to site within the European union to carry the CE mark. CE Marking for constituent structural steel products covered by a harmonised European standard or conforming to a European Technical Assessment, became mandatory on the 1^st July 2013 and for fabricated structural steelworks one year. This represents a major development for engineers, contractors and steelwork specialists and it demands careful attention to the new laws imposed.

You will already recognise the CE mark as its been widely used on toys and electrical goods within the European union for some years. CE marking demonstrates compliance with the appropriate manufacturing standard for a product giving peace of mind that the quality, and more importantly, safety of a product is guaranteed. It provides proof that the product meets working and safety requirements and is essentially ‘fit for purpose’.

The BCSA has also made CE Marking compliance a condition of membership of the Association after 1 July 2014.

What is BS EN 1090?

The harmonised standard covering fabricated structural steelwork is BS EN 1090: Execution of

steel structures and aluminium structures.

Part 1 of the standard is the Requirements for Conformity Assessment of Structural Components. It describes how manufacturers can demonstrate that the components they produce meet the declared performance characteristics (the structural characteristics which make them fit for their particular use and function).

Part 2 is the Technical Requirements for Steel Structures. It specifies the requirements for the execution of steel structures to ensure adequate levels of mechanical resistance and stability, serviceability and durability. It determines the performance characteristics for components that the manufacturer must achieve and declare through the requirements of Part 1.

What do steelwork contractors need to achieve to be compliant?

In order to be able to CE Mark the fabricated structural steelwork that they produce, steelwork contractors are required to declare performance to the System 2+ level of assessment. This requires:

• Initial type-testing of the product
• Factory Production Control (FPC), which will include implementation of FPC system procedures, appointment of a responsible welding coordinator (RWC) and implementation of welding quality management system (WQMS) procedures
• Further testing of samples taken at the factory in accordance with the prescribed test plan.

They must also be assessed by a notified body that will carry out:

• Initial inspection of the manufacturing plant
• Initial inspection of the FPC
• Continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of the FPC, which will typically include an annual audit to ensure continued competence to the declared Execution Class (Table B.3 of BS EN 1090-1 sets out minimum levels for the routine surveillance intervals) The notified body will then issue a FPC certificate and Welding Certificate identifying the Execution Class that the steelwork contractor has achieved.

In order to achieve this, the client or main contractor should appoint a steelwork contractor with an Execution Class equal to that required for the project, as determined by BS EN 1090-1. It should be noted that steelwork contractors with EXC3 capability can be used for EXC1, 2, & 3; and a steelwork contractor with EXC2 capability can be used for EXC1 & 2. At present JWCI Process engineers hold class EXC2 meaning we can undertake any EXC1 and EXC2 projects.

As you can see compliance with the requirements of BS EN 1090-1 is no mean feat and places obligations on the steelwork contractor that take significant time to achieve and then maintain. To eliminate the risk of non-compliance with the CPR, it is essential that you only award projects that will have fabricated structural steelwork to steelwork contractors who have achieved CE Marking accreditation, as the team at JWCI have achieved.

How can CE accreditation be proved?

In order for a steelwork contractor to demonstrate their right to CE Mark their products, they must provide the following three documents:

1. Factory Production Control (FPC) Certificate – issued by a notified body
2. Welding Certificate – issued by a notified body
3. Declaration of Performance (DoP) – issued by the steelwork contractor

The client or main contractor engaging the steelwork contractor should carry out due diligence before appointing any contractor who will be delivering fabricated structural steelwork.

Making sure you are compliant with the regulations

To ensure you comply with the mandatory regulations only choose a steelwork contractor with an execution class equal to that required for your project. CIP Mapping Service
You may not already know but JWCI offer expert CIP/Process pipework and equipment mapping of your facility. CIP Mapping is important as modifications to site services are made over time, the factory drawings are rarely updated if they exist at all. Such documentation can be of benefit for many reasons from future project planning, to an event where the emergency services are called to site to treat an incident, as they would be able to locate critical isolation valves for example which may reduce the potential for the incident to escalate. Although at present the compilation of such documentation is not legally mandatory, the competent person in charge of pipework systems (often the Engineering Manager) has a duty of care to provide all persons working on their site with up to date and accurate information relating to the systems that they will be working on - don't run the risk, let JWCI map your facility.

World’s largest Dairy increases capacity at Aylesbury Site with help from JWCI Ltd

JWCI Ltd’s involvement at the Arla Super Dairy increases thanks to a continued working relationship with Global leader SPX. Chosen by SPX, Staffordshire based process engineers JWCI Ltd, are spearheading work on their pipework projects during the second phase at the super dairy in Aylesbury, UK.

Work on the Arla super dairy started in 2012 - JWCI was the first of several teams on site in January 2013 completing works on chemical distribution plant and pipe work for Global company Ecolab. During this time they worked alongside SPX (formerly APV) who were responsible for all the process plant and pipe work throughout the whole factory.
During Phase 1 at the plant, JWCI, working alongside German and Spanish contractors, completed works on all chemical distribution plant and pipework throughout the factory.
Now fully operational the Arla super dairy implemented phase 2 of site expansion which was awarded to Global firm SPX to introduce additional capacity and improve flexibility.
JWCI was again on site at Aylesbury in December 2014, this time working for Ecolab UK on Phase 2 of the Chemical Installation.

With approximately $5 billion in annual revenue, US based SPX is a multi-industry manufacturing leader with operations in more than 35 countries and over 14,000 employees worldwide. SPX solutions play a vital role in helping food and beverage producers increase their capacity to more efficiently deliver greater quantities of safer, higher quality products. JWCI Ltd began work for the SPX contract in April 2015 after a successful tender application, and with their enviable reputation and previous history working with Ecolab and Arla on other sites, JWCI was an obvious choice.

The installation required multiple process break-ins under high care conditions to be planned into the work. Due to the plant being operational it was essential for recognised good hygienic installation practice and compliance with Arla hygiene standards - and SPX knew that this would be of no concern to JWCI who have worked under these stringent conditions before. 

Second phase projects for SPX at Aylesbury included the installation of plant and interconnecting pipe work associated with the following: finished milk, cream ageing, Cravendale pasteuriser, Cravendale micro filter plant and Cravendale cream.
Having worked in the food industry for many years JWCI has an enviable reputation in the sector and continues to work alongside some of the largest names in the industry.

JWCI Claim Prestigious Principal Contractor Spot for Cheadle Hulme Ecolab Project

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 places legal duties on those involved in construction projects ensuring that rules, regulations and safety procedures are carried out at all times. This ensures the safety of all site contractors, visitors and employees. The appointment of a Principal Contractor is vital and a task not to be taken lightly.

JWCI recently worked on the Cheadle Hulme site for Ecolab, which, following the merger with Nalco meant the site was being decommissioned and equipment relocated to the larger Nalco/Ecolab site at Northwich in Cheshire. The strip-out project began in 2013 and was completed in the summer of 2014. 

JWCI were appointed as Principal Contractor on the Cheadle Hulme project. A brief overview of the tasks associated with the Principal Contractor role are listed below:

• 1) Plan, manage and monitor construction phase in liaison with all contractors
• 2) Prepare, develop and implement a written plan and site rules (Initial plan completed before the construction phase begins)
• 3) Give contractors relevant parts of the plan
• 4) Make sure suitable welfare facilities are provided from the start and maintained throughout the construction phase
• 5) Check competence of all appointees
• 6) Ensure all workers have site inductions and any further information and training needed for the work
• 7) Consult with the workers
• 8) Liaise with CDM co-ordinator regarding ongoing design
• 9) Secure the site

In addition Principal contractors are responsible for all safety permit issues, health and safety site paperwork and displays, first aid facilities and putting in to place emergency procedures. With JWCI's many years of experience in the industry this proved to be a suitable challenge to which they easily rose.

We’re up to speed on the new CE mark fabricated steelwork regulations – are you?

From 1^st July 2014 the regulations surrounding fabricated structural steelwork are changing. It is to become mandatory for all steel fabrications delivered to site to carry the CE mark. 

CE marking demonstrates compliance with the appropriate manufacturing standard for a product. The symbol has been widely used for several years in relation to toys and electrical goods, but this change is new to the construction industry. CE marking provides proof that the product meets working and safety requirements and is essentially ‘fit for purpose’.

The technical part

Under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) new legal obligations have been placed on manufacturers, distributors and importers of construction products used within the EU to CE mark their products where they are covered by either a harmonised standard or European Technical Assessment (ETA). This applies to constituent products (such as steel beams and bolts) and to fabricated elements (such as gantry and walkways) made from CE marked products.

The CPR required CE marking of all construction products from 1^st July 2013 and the ruling for fabricated structural steelwork comes into effect this July.

Choosing the right Steelwork Contractor

To ensure you comply with these new regulations you should only employ contractors who carry the necessary CE mark execution class relevant to the specific project.

In order to be able to CE mark their fabricated structural steelwork contractors must undertake:

• Initial type testing of the product

• Factory Production Control (FPC) which will include implementation of FPC procedures, appointment of a responsible welding coordinator and implementation of a welding quality management system.

• Further testing of samples taken at the factory in accordance with the prescribed test plan.

Successful structural steelwork fabrication contractors will receive an FPC certificate and a welding certificate, which identifies the execution class that the contractor has achieved. 

An Execution Class of EXC2 will be the appropriate requirement for the majority of buildings constructed in the UK.

JWCI LTD spend a whirlwind 10 days in Northern Ireland for Ecolab GMBH

Every little helps as JWCI travels across to Belfast to install a new stainless steel hygienic conveyor cleaning system for the well known company Diageo (Manufacturer’s of Bailey’s Irish Cream) on behalf of ECOLAB GmBH.

A team of three experienced JWCI engineers set off in the early hours of a Wednesday morning so that they could arrive on site by Thursday for the site induction and setting up of a safe working environment. Later that day the team met with the customer to walk through their ideas of how they wanted the job installing ready for an early start Friday morning.

The JWCI team began work installing the pipe work and spray nozzles onto the conveyors knowing they had a restricted amount of time to get the job completed, within a couple of days the team realised that if they were to get this time consuming project completed to their usual high standards, and on time for commissioning, they would put in a few more hours and this is exactly what they did. This ensured the customer would not have any potentially costly down time on production.

By Friday night the team had fully installed the conveyor system meaning that Saturday morning ECOLAB could start commissioning the conveyor as planned. When ECOLAB commissioning engineers arrived on site the JWCI team walked them through the finished system and they were more than pleased with what we had achieved. The system was commissioned and with zero faults or issues the JWCI team had successfully achieved its goals of making both ECOLAB and Diageo very happy customers.

Customer satisfaction is the main aim of JWCI and once again they achieved this by working to their very high standards and using their expertise to get the job done under such high pressure.

The contract for the chemical distribution at the new 70 acre Aylesbury site was awarded to Ecolab GMBH. JWCI have worked with Ecolab UK for many years but had previously only worked on smaller scale projects for the German company. JWCI invited the project leaders from Ecolab GMBH to their offices in 2012 so they could meet the team and see how JWCI’s experience and skills could benefit the project.

Having worked in the food industry for many years JWCI have built up an enviable reputation for their high standards of professionalism so the relationship with Ecolab GMBH and the Arla project developed from there. 

JWCI were first on site for Ecolab in January 2013 to organise the early stages of the project and by February were designated to undertake the whole mechanical installation within the chemical room and service corridors to provide connection points to two other firms joining the site the following month. The team consisting of JWCI, a second British firm and a company from Germany worked alongside each other to then complete all chemical distribution plant and pipework throughout the factory. JWCI were last to leave site having completed all services during commissioning in November 2013.

Work undertaken included positioning tanks, installing brackets and all pipework, fabricating and installing walkways, gantry and staircases. JWCI also supplied the majority of pipe and fittings for use on the site by the three teams. 

One of the two completed tank installations with bespoke stainless steel gantry. 

JWCI were responsible for all new pipe work throughout the chemical room 
along with the gantry and equipment installations.

Major Project for Ecolab by JWCI Ltd

JWCI ltd are pleased to have been awarded the contract for a major restructure and refit at the Northwich Cheshire site for the global leader in the hygiene industry, Ecolab.This prestigious contract was awarded to JWCI after the world’s largest sustainability services company, Nalco merged with hygiene giant Ecolab.  

The merger means Ecolab now have over 41,000 employees in more than 170 countries. Founded in 1923 the merger brings together two highly complimentary industries to provide global sustainability services and hygiene solutions across the food, beverage, hygiene and medical industries.

The joining of the two businesses saw the Ecolab manufacturing facility at Cheadle Hulme being relocated to join the larger Ecolab/Nalco site at Northwich in Cheshire. 

JWCI have worked on projects for Ecolab previously and proved to be highly competent in their professional manner and expertise both on site and in the design and manufacture stages.

Phase one of this large project was undertaken by JWCI in partnership with Ecolab’s onsite team and  proved such a success that JWCI became solely responsible for Phase two.

Phase one of the contract, which began in December 2012 included supply and installation of pipe work, removal and installation of tanks and mixing vessels plus supply, fabrication and installation of new tailored pipework and mezzanine floor supports. The later phase involved the strip out of the new site which included provision and management of crane lifts and providing all required health and safety documentation surrounding this. JWCI provide a full design, manufacture, installation and maintenance service to their customers and this streamlined ‘one supplier’ approach means greater peace of mind for the client. 

The larger second phase, a complete strip out and replacement project, included decommissioning of existing mixer tanks and pipework plus installing new steam lines, steam traps, valves and instrumentation. New gantries and pipework were fabricated and installed by JWCI’s highly experienced on-site team.

JWCI Ltd - Investing in the future

JWCI Limited is a long established company, located in the heart of the UK with our Head Office in Cheadle and manufacturing facilities in Fole, Uttoxeter. We design, construct and install processing equipment for a wide range of customers in the dairy, food, chemical and other process industries.

The current economic climate is proving tough for many businesses but JWCI are ‘bucking the trend’ with big plans over the next 12 months. 

With many years in the industry under their belt  JWCI are investing in a site expansion of their current manufacturing facilities in Fole. The expansion will improve facilities and help meet the increasing demand for high quality engineering.

The larger workshops and improved employee facilities will increase productivity and allow JWCI to undertake larger commissions in-house and reduce manufacturing times.

There will also be a new testing facility for skids and equipment to minimize commissioning on site.
